The purpose of the bucket test is to separate evaporation from water loss. It doesn’t matter if it rains or if it’s 100° out, the bucket doesn’t lie.

  1. Fill pool to normal operating level.
  2. Fill a bucket with pool water to within 2 to 3 inches of the top.
  3. Place the bucket on the second step in the pool.(put a rock or a brick in the bucket if it wants to float)
  4. Mark the water level within the bucket.
  5. Mark the water level of the pool.
  6. Check your marks after 24 hours under normal operating conditions and make a note.

What does it mean?

If you have lost more water in the pool that you did in the bucket… You have a leak.

It’s time to call us…

This test will tell us if we are looking at a plumbing leak or if the leak is within the shell of the pool.

It is not uncommon to have more than one problem, but this will tell us where to start.

Just follow these steps…

  1. Fill the pool to its normal operating level.
  2. Mark the water level of your pool on the steps or skimmer.
  3. Monitor the pool for 12 hours with the pool equipment running… Check your mark and record results.
  4. Refill pool if necessary.
  5. Remark pool and monitor for 12 hours with the equipment off. Check your mark and record results.
  6. Remember to do both tests for the same amount of time.

What do the results mean?

  • If there is a difference with water loss when the equipment is on or off, there is a plumbing issue.
  • If the pool lost more water with the pump on then off, that indicates a leak in the return side of your plumbing i.e. returns or jets.
  • If the pool lost more water with the pump off then it indicates a leak on the suction side, i.e. the skimmers or main drain.

Record your results accurately and calls us… We will analyze the results and tell you where to start.

Dr. Joe, Toms River, NJ

With an aging liner, I’ve had to call on Tony a few times over the years for leak issues. He is easy to reach, asks the right questions, shows up when he says he will, and takes time and care to address the issue correctly the first time. Highly Recommend!

Dennis D, Dennis D

We contacted Tony as we had a few holes in the liner of our pool. The water level was going down and we had to fill water regularly. Tony and his son did a great job fixing the problem and were very punctual and polite. I highly recommend them for their professionalism & courteous manner.
